The secret weapon of problem-solving champions!

The 5 Whys

You’ve got a challenge.
It’s staring you down.
But instead of just slapping a Band-Aid on it, you’re about to dig deep and uncover what’s really going on.

Enter the 5 Whys — the deceptively simple, wildly effective tool that turns surface-level problems into breakthrough insights.

How It Works (and Why It’s Awesome)

01

Start with the problem as you see it.

Start with the problem as you see it. Don’t overthink it — just name it.
02

Ask: "Why is this happening?

Take that answer and ask: “Why is that happening?”
Repeat. Again.
And again.
Five times.
03

Getting to the core.

By the fifth “Why,” you’re not just scratching the surface — you’re hitting bedrock.
Use it when things feel stuck.
Use it when you want clarity.
Use it when you’re ready to stop guessing and start solving.

The 5 Whys — Simple. Smart. Strategic.

Example That Hits Home

Problem: Our loan pipeline is inconsistent.

1- Why? We struggle to attract new borrowers.
2- Why? Our marketing is limited.
3- Why? We lack staff capacity and budget.
4- Why? Our funding sources are too rigid.
5- Why? We rely too heavily on short-term federal grants.

🎯 Boom!
The real issue isn’t marketing — it’s unstable funding.
That’s the lever you need to pull.

This isn’t just theory — we’re doing it live.

Session 1:
Live 5 Whys Breakouts!

Here’s the plan:
  • You’ll break out into paired organizations — think of it like a curiosity jam session.
  • Each organization brings the challenge they’re solving for with their innovation.
  • Then you’ll take turns asking each other “Why?” five times.
  • Capture the answers, follow the thread, and see where it leads.
But Wait — That’s Just the Beginning!

Once you’ve surfaced those root causes, don’t stop there.

Use your breakout time to:
  • Compare notes — Did you end up somewhere unexpected?
  • Spot patterns — Are there shared challenges?
  • Map the ripple effects — What other systems or people are impacted?
  • Start dreaming solutions — What would it take to shift the deeper issue?

To make the most of your breakout convo, try these:

  • Be curious, not corrective — You’re not solving yet, you’re exploring.
  • Ask follow-up questions if something feels fuzzy. (“Can you say more about that?” is gold.)
  • Don’t rush — Let each “Why” breathe. Sometimes the third or fourth one is where the magic happens.
  • Take notes — You’ll want to remember what surfaced!
  • Be generous — Help your partner feel heard and supported.
